hand luggage

Today is my last day in Germany before I head to London for 10 days. I’m working through a mental to-do list and making the most of my time with Christian and Ralphy. As I need to pack this weekend I decided to share my tips when packing hand luggage. Whether it’s a long or short haul flight there is a check list of items I swear by.

The wheelie and the tote…

Travel has changed since my first proper carry on case. No longer am I winging it hoping to get past the boarding gate unnoticed. I can relax knowing my case is the right size and I don’t have to pay to have it checked last minute. It also has an i phone charger which is basically life! You might think it’s unnecessary if you are checking a larger case but I promise it’s not. If you are going hand luggage only then you could check out my post on packing light. If you are taking a larger case I recommend packing a change of clothes and other essentials in your carry on. Then if the other case is lost you won’t be screwed basically. A cotton tote or small cross body bag is handy for anything you need to hand such as wallet and passport.

Don’t forget that cash…

I can’t remember the amount of times I forget to get some local currency before arriving. The last thing you want to do is worry about a cash machine as soon as you arrive. You will probably need one at some point, yes. But if you have enough cash for a taxi you’ll be sorted even if the airport cash machine aint working.

how to pack

Travel tends to be a long old thing. The flight from Germany to London is just over an hour but it takes me the best part of a day to get from door to door. So, I make sure my hand luggage is full of tricks to keep me entertained. Book, phone and always remember the earphones. At the moment I’m reading Kabbalistic Astrology, it’s brilliant. I always take my laptop with me and make use of the free wifi in airports. Most offer an hour for free which helps break up the wait on netflix or you tube.

Bathroom essentials…

I always pack some mini toiletries just in case. Toothpaste and toothbrush, hand sanitizer, face mist and other skincare and basic medicine. And whatever you do don’t forget lip balm. Again, this covers you if god forbid your main case isn’t waiting at the other side. The other week I wrote a blog post on skincare when flying. It has tips for both short and long haul flights because let’s face it. Those flying tin cans aint nice to our skin.

Something fluffy and snacks….

I love to wear a soft hoodie when I’m traveling. It’s nice to pull the hood up and block out the outside world for a while. If it’s a long haul flight then an inflatable neck cushion is a must. The food selection isn’t always great on a flight so I like to bring some healthy snacks and plenty of water. Nut’s and some fruit usually do the trick.

Wonderful ideas and tips James. I was in the South West of France for one month and the weather was absolutely beautiful. Guess what? I was wearing only like three layers and soft fleece and it all went well for a January/February business trip. Now back in the Freezing weather of London! Well, live life is all it has to be lol! I love your blog!

So glad to see someone else who packs an outfit change just in case the larger case is lost! So many people think I’m mad doing it 😂 Rubino Roo have a great hand luggage size case on the site and I’ve used mine so many time since having it back in October it’s been great.
